This Week is the Great Kindness Challenge

Addressing Period Tardies:
Our January SMART Goal: By January 30th, reduce the number of students with 10 or more tardies to under 100 students (not counting 1st period)

Month
Students with 10 or More Tardies
January

December

November
54
October
115

As you can see, we are on track to meet our SMART goal….

More good news in January. Our referrals are down...

Curiously, our Cougar Credit points given to students are down as well...
The kids are responding with better behavior. We just need to keep up the positive praise! If we continue to promote positive behavior (giving points), we can assume that there will be fewer referrals and fewer tardies!! Let’s not leave our students hanging.

Looking deeper, there is still more work to be done. Do you see the achievement gap in this data??

When one group is over-represented with a higher discipline rate than % of student population, we have the makings of an achievement gap.
Looking at our subgroups that are over represented with referrals, who are the specific students this data represents? What will Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices, Restorative Justice Practices, Trauma Informed Care and LOTS of positive praise do to change their lives??

Principal Chat / Parent Feedback

Our parents our concerned about tardies. At the principal chat, many noted concerns:
  • Students not in class
  • Students are not getting their education
  • Students are disrupting the education of others
  • Students are making the teacher’s job harder
Solutions from our parents about tardies:
  • Teachers should use Parent Portal and make it reliable to use for all parents
  • Parents should rely on Parent Portal to monitor their child’s daily attendance
  • Parents, teachers, and admin should work together to confront habitually tardy students
  • Admin should continue to refer to SARB students with excessive tardies and tardies over 30 minutes
Our parents are concerned about disruptive students. What are the guidelines?
  • Many students in FSUSD and beyond struggle with significant social and emotional challenges
  • Significant social and emotional challenges are the result of adverse childhood experiences
  • Teachers have the immense challenge of addressing students’ social and emotional needs and the learning gaps that have opened up, thus decreasing student engagement
  • Fostering academic achievement and simultaneously addressing social and emotional needs within the classroom requires skill, experience, training and a tremendous amount of energy from teachers
Solutions from our parents about disruptive students:
  • Suspension for disruption and defiance (Ed Code Section 48900 k) no longer an option
  • Increased training for teachers to address students unique and severe social and emotional needs
  • Continued training and support for teachers on strategies to foster achievement while simultaneously addressing students’ social and emotional needs.
  • Reminding ourselves that all parents, regardless, love their child and wish to make sure they are successful.
  • At minimum, all teachers should maintain a reliable communication channel on Parent Portal for all parents to access.
Parent Praises:
  • College and Career Technician Brenda Cruz is doing a GREAT JOB! Looking forward to the field trip this weekend to Sacramento State with exposure to many colleges and the Mexican Consulate!
